The fall of the all-singing all-dancing campus?

A survey done by the Chronicle of Higher Education showed that universities are finally coming to terms with the fact that they cannot be all things to all people, and that resources can be better spent utilising the services of and partnering with companies/organisations that specialise in those things.

These can be just simple gyms, online learning developers, or student housing (instead of having to build and maintain their own). The costs can spiral as universities would need to hire experts to oversee the process, provide training, spend on equipment, etc. The same principles extend to more and more universities relying on an ever-growing base of adjunct faculty.

Is this trend indicating a ‘woke’ education world learning the lesson that big isn’t always good, and many isn’t always effective? Is this a parallel of the factory boom at the start of the industrial revolution evolving into a Just-in-Time model?
